We Like To Skateboard, And Start Trouble

5 Things I've Learned From Skateboarding: Mike Dixon

I've been on my plank of wood since the day my dad got me my first kmart board cruising in front of my house when i was around 9 or 10 years old. Skateboarding helped me become who I am and how I think today.

One of the most importnat things I've learned from skateboarding is patience. You can't get everything you want 1st try. It takes hours, days, years to finally accomplish what you want. Hard work and dedication with a hand full of failure, but the moment I land a trick I've been working on, those 5 secounds of success is one of the greatest feelings I've ever encountered.

An obvious one every skateboarder learns is balance. At least the majority of skateboarders learn their center gravity in time. I don't know how many times in the winter i've caught myself from slipping on ice and catching myself before i lean back to much and die.

Maybe you think you can't do something, but your skating buddies tell you that you can. You're scared and it's hard to fully commit to the trick you want to learn. Skateboarding has helped me learn to battle fear and make it my bitch. Clear your mind and say fuck it, and just go for it. I don't know how many times in my life I've said and done that. No matter what the outcome is though, at least you can say you've tried.

Every now and then it could be the slightest mistake and you hurt yourself real bad. In skateboarding you know that accidents are always going to happen and theres nothing you can do about it, so you have to accept the fact that you're going to get hurt. It sucks, but we're all used to it. And if you get a good fall on film its not so bad in the end. Plus, pain is only temporary. Nowadays i get a good shinner and I think nothing of it.

Skateboarding helped me open up my imagination. Every time Im in the passenger seat of a car I'm looking out the window scoping for something to skate. Everytime. No matter who I'm with on what occasion it's a thing that we do. There's limitless room for creativity in skateboarding and the more creative we get, the more fun it becomes. I'm always thinking of new tricks to learn and new ideas with freinds at the skatepark. My skateboard is like a pencil and the world is my piece of paper.
