I was first introduced to Brian Gibson and Brian Chippendale's band over a decade ago. "What the fuck is this?" I thought, trying to wrap my head around loud, distorted riffs over a spastic drum beat.
My friend, who was playing me "Ride The Skies" explained, "It's only two guys, a bass player and a drummer." It was loud, it was fast, and god damn was it fucking awesome.
Last night Lightning Bolt played a sold out show at The Empty Bottle here in Chicago, and it was interesting to see how well they work together. Even more interesting was the eclectic crowd they brought. Over the past few years these guys been traveling all over the world, playing some of the most intense music I have ever heard, and it was cool to see that they had a devoted audience who loved what they're doing.
Its the day after, I barely got any sleep, my body hurts, and I can't really hear out of my ear. But seeing two guys who have been working their asses off for years doing something that they love was worth it. It's unclear to tell what Lightning Bolt's place in music history will be, but the talent and power that comes from just two individuals is undeniable.
They released a new album called "Fantasy Empire" which is amazing, and they're currently on tour in support of it. So if you get the chance, see them live, and bring some earplugs.
